CHAPTER 22

Let go of me, you tri-footed ugly-faced latrine turnip!” Avienne tried to kick sideways but failed to connect, and was tossed aside like a bag of potatoes. She landed hard against a wall and fell to her knees, the pain vibrating up her spine. Her hands were tightly bound behind her back, the metals cuffs cutting her skin. She continued struggling, hardly caring about the pain.

They had taken her weapons, those bastards. Her knives, her gun, her small explosives—all gone. At least I left my good ether knives on the ship. The thought brought little comfort.

She was trapped, somewhere in a holding cell. She hadn’t seen where they had taken her, and the guards were growing annoyed at her constant attacks.

Smarten up, she could hear a small voice in her mind protest. But she squashed it down.

She was bound, surrounded, in a dingy concrete cell that smelled of urine and blood. Never before had she been held by anyone, and she didn’t intend to make it easy on them.

Unfolding her legs, she leapt forward to head butt the nearest soldier, but something pulled her back to the wall and she snapped back against it, the air knocked out of her, her shoulders almost tugged out of their sockets by the strength of the bonds.

She slid halfway to the ground, but the chain held her up at an awkward height. She looked back and could barely make out a restraining system. The cold clamps tugged on her bloodied wrists. She bit back a cry.

Like I’d give them the satisfaction.

“So?” the leader of the little troop asked. “Looks human enough.” He smirked. “That shuttle of yours. Marked from Mirial. Better hope it’s something you stole. Thieves get off easier than Mirialers, in these parts.”

Avienne’s blood grew cold. She couldn’t feel her fingers anymore, the clamps were so tight.

“We know how to check, you know. And I think you’re worth checking.”

She glared at them, pleased to see a few shift nervously. Let them try to “check out” anything, and she’d deal with them accordingly. Ready to pounce, regardless of her bound hands, she was surprised to see them turn their backs and leave the cell.

The door opened again and a man was thrown in, stumbling to the ground. He was an ether creature, that much was obvious. A Kilita, from Avienne’s reckoning. Their race had once been strongly affiliated with Solaria, a powerful warrior race sought after for their cunning. But the man before her did not look cunning, folded over on himself.

Before Avienne could ask the man if he was all right, he looked up at her and straightened his torso, while remaining on his knees. His eyes were orange and half-slit, a giant scar running down his left cheek.

But it was his hands that held her attention. His right hand was badly patched up with bandages, or what remained of it, anyway. It had been cut clean at the wrist.

Avienne hissed and her hands turned to fists. She hoped she’d get a chance to fight her way free.
